Talking to him shouldn't be this difficult...

Veterinarian Greg Evans is better at caring for animals than navigating his own relationships. So when Jasper asks for help in adopting a puppy, it’s just the ice breaker he needs to get his second chance.

After losing Bella, his yellow lab, Jasper’s having a hard time ignoring her absence. In an apartment that's way too big without her, a puppy is exactly what he needs to ease the ache around his heart. The fact he’s had a crush on Greg since the tenth grade doesn’t hurt.

As they prepare for the puppy’s arrival, their twenty-year friendship becomes something more. Jasper’s ready to take things to the next level, but after crossing paths with Greg’s ex one too many times, he can’t help thinking there’s something left between them.

Will Greg have the courage to let Jasper in, or will his fears sabotage their friendship for good?

A Fighting Chance is a steamy, friends to lovers gay romance with a HEA and no cliffhangers.

Previously published under Miya Lee.

It's hard to believe initially that Jasper and Greg were close friends once. There is pain, despair, and embarrassment initially when it takes weeks for Jasper to contact Greg after the loss of his best friend, Bella. Even after / though veterinarian Greg Evans rushes to his Clinic to meet Jasper when his beloved Bella was dying. So he needed the comfort and compassion or understanding friends and family he seemingly had his family but no friend(s) to help with his profound grief.

Mixed in with his emergence from deep grieving is a realization that the feelings Jared had for his former best friend have been slowly reemerging. Feelings he was certain were not reciprocated. He doesn't know what he is afraid of more - making the decision to get another dog or returning one of the Vet's long ago calls of concern. This new author's manner of storytelling doesn't indicate how close the two men used to be in the past. It's almost like their own relationship was just that a veterinarian and dog owner.

If you are a dog lover you will be touched and enjoy this story of loss, grief, and burgeoning hope for a new dog and possibly a new love. The initial letting go is thought to be the hardest time, but when your home and your dearest closest friend and often semi constant companion isn't around is what really hurts the most. There are some parallels in the lives of the two MCs that make the decision to get another dog a cathartic event.

It's so hard to know when the best time is to get a new companion. To decide if it will be a baby, an Adolescent, or an older dog is another big question. The exact time depends on so many factors, but it's not something that can be rushed. The former owner knows when the hole in their heart is finally ready to be filled again. Breed, age, and where to get a new dog feel overwhelming at first. Having someone who understands how you feel to go to and discuss options is immensely helpful. That person being a dog expert or veterinarian is even ten times better.

The focus of this story are the dogs even though initially neither MC owns one. The stages of grief are observed. For loss of a pet and a friendship. When the two MCs start working together to get Jasper a dog, but not a Lab he selects a Rescue Center that the vet is associated with. Jasper has even looked at some of the dogs on the website avoiding Labs like his Bella though.

There are two intertwined stories. Once the two former friends resolve their issues, the bringing a new dog home process becomes a lot easier. Jasper has used his body as a canvas of who is important to him. Family members including Bella. A way to honor their memories to show how important they are / were / will always be.

Have you ever had a puppy steal your heart? A dog so special he/she felt Irreplaceable? What happened when you finally opened your home and heart to a new dog? Did you mess up and call the new dog by the old dog's name? But that's okay. Can you now look at pictures of your deceased baby boy or girl and remember the good times? You can now put away his / her dish or bed or collar & leash. Buying new things for your new dog is fun. You can begin building new memories. And close family and friends share in your happiness of bringing home a new companion, just as they comforted you while you'd been grieving.

I have a 13 year old Scottish terrier and I spoil her everyday. She is enjoying the warmer weather of Spring. I try not to dwell on her health problems, but remember that mischievous pup she on rare occasions still shows. Everyday is precious even when the little 8 pound 2 year old Miniature Wirehaired Dachshund annoys her, later I find them lying companionably together. The smaller, younger dog taking her cues from the old girl. Three years ago I had another Scottish terrier. A 12 year old boy who was my best bud. Lost much too soon, but never ever forgotten. Not replaced, but the pitter patter of little paws a year later, made my heart ache less and less each day. As well as providing companionship to my remaining then 11 year old Scottish terrier. My phone camera is full of pictures of the old and new girls. And breed calendars adorn my home and work. Each and everyone I've lost has a special well remembered place in my heart.

A Fighting Chance Wild Heart Book 1 edition by Devon Cross Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

It was so disjointed and disorganized. I could not even finish reading the whole thing. I even skipped a lot of pages so I can reach the end. I'm not so sure if it's because of my mood today, but this has certainly affected this book...
I found this so boring I couldn't remember if I'd finished it or not. I gave it a second chance and couldn't finish it that time either. The story is erratic, the MC's are not particularly interesting by themselves or together and while the all the dog related stuff was an initial draw it's actually quite sad and/or stressful for most part. The relationship seems to start out of nowhere after some stilted early interaction and all of sudden they're in a steady relationship. Also there are repeated instances of one MC making a supposedly humorous remark and they 'enjoy a good laugh' about it before the story moves on. It's a very awkward way to describe something that shouldn't require spelling out.
The puppy on the cover drew me in, but Jasper and Greg kept me reading. I didn't want it to end. Loved the story, and the characters. Terrific book!
It really is a Lifetime movie in the making. It is sappy and sweet, emotional with a happy ending. Pure love.
I had read book two of this series, Change Of Heart, first and it was wonderful to go back and read Greg and Jasper's story. This book was about love, loss and friendship, with each of the main characters managing to find a way through their own pain to get the second chance they both deserve.

Grab a copy of this book! You won't be sorry!! I can't wait to read book three in the series!
This was terribly boring. The first seven chapters were a disjointed roundabout between how broken up Jasper was over losing his dog, how he was afraid of getting a new one, and how he was afraid to ask Greg out. According to the search, the first kiss (not counting a 20 year old flashback) doesn't take place until Chap. 12; there's only 20 chapters. Maybe if the book would've had better writing - this was borderline junior high/high school level - with interesting and developed characters I could have stuck with it. But it had none of that, and there was way too much talk about getting a dog, owning a dog, caring for a dog. Geez, it felt like a how-to book on dog adoption. And there was more chemistry between the men and the dogs than the 2 men. I just couldn't finish.
Reading this is kind of timely as my husband and I are helping his mother look for a dog at local rescues as a companion due to the loss of her husband a few months ago.

Greg is a vet who has recently broken up with his boyfriend, due to a tragedy he won't talk about. Jasper recently lost his beloved dog. He and Greg were best friends in high school, but things cooled off when Greg went to college and Jasper did not. They've stayed friendly over the years, but not close. Jasper asks Greg to help him find another dog. He finds a recently born female lab, and decides to adopt her once she is old enough. Greg has an odd reaction, but decided to help Jasper anyway. Despite the years, they have both always loved each other. Can they help each other work through the pain of loss and another possible tragedy?

Well written with enough of Greg not wanting to talk, which frustrates Jasper and the reader. I stayed up late and couldn't put it down until I found out what happened to Greg and his ex.

Quite an enjoyable read!
