This writer provided some very astute observations on the state of Russia just prior to the outbreak of hostilities with Japan. A quick, fun read.
If you're interested in the Trans-Siberian railroad experience, this book will give you an overview from an independent traveler who stops along the way and writes about each region. It's not a travel book per se, so if you're planning a trip, you will need other resources. Somewhat depressing is all the poverty in Central Southern Siberia.
